Review: Threads Opaque tights (Updated: 10 Sep 23)

Since the introduction of Sheer-to-Waist tights, Threads has renamed this style as Opaque Contour tights.  I was going to update the review to reflect the name change.  But I realised this pair was gifted before the Brand revamped their sizing.  In other words, it could be incompatible with the new size chart.  So I decided to leave the review as is.

New brand for review!  After nearly two months of waiting, the samples sent by Threads finally arrived (yes that is how disruptive the logistics has been).  I am thrilled to share with you first my thoughts on these Opaque tights.  The Sheer ones will follow soon.

A brief introduction about the Brand…

Threads is a Canada-based hosiery brand founded by Xenia Chen in 2018.  Their mission is “to give you convenience, affordability and a great product that looks and feels good.”  Currently, Threads has two styles available: the Sheer and the Opaque tights.  They plan to introduce men’s tights this August.  If you would like to learn more about the Brand, Hosiery for Men have done several interviews with the founder, which you can find here and here.

Thanks to Threads for sending the item for review.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Strengths & Weaknesses

⊕ High quality yarn gives superb feel and comfort.
⊕ Medium-to-strong support on the lower body and upper thigh.

⊗ Large amounts of residual dye.  Wash or rinse before wearing strongly recommended.

Packaging & product description

The packaging is plain and simple.  I have made a short clip for the unboxing.  Notice the sticker on the packaging, which provides specs of the style.

The simplicity of the packaging does hint a save of a few dollars for customers.  In addition, Threads uses Opaque and Sheer as naming of relevant styles at the moment.  I would anticipate this to be altered in some way as the Brand expands its collection.

The product description in available online only.  It reads:

“Our opaque tights are our 60 denier tights. Comfortable and functional, with our signature Threads contoured waistband. Wear them with your favorite dress or skirt, or under pants as an extra layer for warmth. Made in Italy.”

  • Microfiber Double-covered Yarn: Super comfortable. Less likely to static and stick to your clothes.
  • Contoured Waistband: Hugs all the right areas. Bum-lifting.
  • Enhanced Leg Length: A more realistic (longer) leg length. No more double crotch.
  • Built to Last: Designed to hold up. 3D construction.

Appearance & texture

As the name indicates, the style is opaque (60 denier) in nature, in a matt appearance.  The total length of the tights in size B is approximately 82cm when laid on a flat surface.  The texture is soft and smooth to the touch.  The panty is also has an opaque look, and shaped like a boxer brief.  It has shaping effect on the tummy, hips and upper thigh.  The waistband measures 3.5cm wide.  There is no marking or tag on the waistband.  The distance between the tip of the waistband to the crotch is around 21cm.  There is a gusset, and the toe section is not separately knitted.

The composition is 85% Polyamide and 15% Elastane.

The feet and lower leg section of the hose are not shaped.

Size range

There are four sizes available for the style.  It accommodates heights from 150cm-190cm and weights from 35kg to 100kg.  I have included the size chart below.  Size B was provided for this review.

Colour

Black is the only colour currently available for the style, hence this is the colour used in this review.

Impression

A quick mention before going into the details…  I hand washed the tights and found large amount of residual dye being released.  It was the darkest I have ever seen in my reviews.  The water was pretty much clear after 3 rinse cycles.  For this reason, a wash before wearing is strongly recommended.  You don’t want the dye to sink into your clothing or shoes on a wet day.

FIT

The fit was pretty good and true to the size recommendation.  There was also a good envelopment on the legs. For the panty section, the envelopment was strong, which I will say a bit more in the FEEL section below.

There is no markings or a tag on the waistband.  Yet, it was pretty straightforward to identify front and back from the shaping panty.  I didn’t encounter any problems with the waistband or the toe section.  It fitted perfectly on me.

LOOK

The shaping effect was probably the most prominent when it comes to appearance.  You can see that my buttocks were lifted, my tummy was virtually flat, and the lump on my waist was less apparent.

There is a tint of reflective sheen when shone upon.  Otherwise it was generally matt.  In addition, there were no snags or inconsistencies found during unboxing.  The tights looked to be pretty good in quality.

FEEL & SHAPING EFFECT

This is where Threads’ tights stand out.  The style felt very smooth and soft on the skin.  It was also very cottony (despite no cotton content).  It was apparent that Threads focused their attention to high quality yarn.  The result?  Superb feel and comfortable on the legs throughout the day.

For me, the strongest support was on the upper thigh.  The hug was firm throughout the day.  The hip-lifting effect was also very clear (especially if you compare the image to my other images of the same pose).  In addition, the pressure on the tummy was moderate.

The seam at the toe section is not a flat seam, so it felt like stepping on a piece of string.

I have been testing the style in winter (around 14°C during the day and just under 10° in the evenings) and the thickness felt just right.  It provided sufficient warmth in this temperature range.  The timing of the arrival of these tights couldn’t be better.

Final words

Frankly speaking, the Opaque Tights are in accord with Threads’ mission.  They are very comfortable and affordable.  I definitely recommend it, especially if you like a moderate-to-strong shaping effect at the lower torso.

The Opaque Tights are available for USD$18 or CAD$24, which is roughly €15 or £13.

The style is now named Opaque Contour Tights, and is priced at CAD$35, USD$25, €23.95 or £21.  Threads also offer subscription services.  The Brand now ships to a variety of countries.  You could ask them if you would like to buy but live outside of the countries listed on their website.
