I have been following Pierre Mantoux for some time mainly due to their exquisite designs. However, I wasn’t too sure about their quality, so I bought a couple pairs of basic styles during the UK Tights promotion of the brand. This is one of them – the Veloutine 15 tights.
Due to limited info on the official website, I rely on UK Tights and other online retailers for specs.
Strengths & Weaknesses
⊕ Very comfortable to wear.
⊕ Minor snags are reversible.
⊗ The hose catches loose hairs easily.
Packaging & product description
The packaging uses the standard cardboard, tri-fold cardboard and transparent plastic sleeve manner. The product description is printed on the back of the packaging in several languages. The size chart, wash labels and composition are also provided. On the thin cardboard, you will find a brief description about the Brand. Instructions on how to put on the tights, as well as the warranty of quality, are on the other side.
The product description on the back of the packaging reads:
“15 Deniers, 3D microfibre matte tights, extremely soft and velvety. Equipped with a soft, chequereffect waistband that once worn looks like textured polka dots and reinforced under waistband. Special reinforced toes without elastan for maximum freedom of movement.”
Appearance & texture
The Veloutine 15 is sheer (15 denier) tights in total matte fashion. It is sheer-to-waist. The texture is fairly soft and smooth to the touch. The waistband measures 3cm wide. It is made with a soft, chequer-effect fabric that looks like textured polka dots once worn. There is also a 2cm-wide fingerband that extends to both sides of the seam on the panty. In addition, there is a cotton gusset, and the toe section is reinforced.
The composition is 60% polyamide and 40% elastane.
There are five sizes for this style, ranging from I-S to V-XXL. I have included the size chart below. Size L is used in this review.
At the time of writing this review, there are five colours listed on the UK Tights website. They are Black (Nero), Blu, Visone, Ambre and Nudo. I have also seen Antracite and Brazil colour from other online retailers. I have bought Nero for this review.
The fit was good, and so did the envelopment. The tights lightly hugged the legs and the lower body. The waistband was very comfortable. I didn’t experience any bulge or bag throughout the day, possibly due to high amount of elastane.
I liked the overall appearance, which has a look of high quality craftsmanship. It looked like ultra-sheer (10 denier appearance) instead of sheer to me. The colour was evenly distributed throughout. However, it looked more like dark blue than black. I do wonder if the manufacturer have put the wrong sticker on the packaging.
The patterns on the waistband are intertwined with half of the squares elevated and the other half deepened, creating a chess board-like appearance.
One great feature I found with the style was that minor distortions and snags can be restored. This is done by gently pulling the hose surrounding the distorted area. They would disappear as if nothing happened.
A problem I often encountered was that the hose got caught up with other loose hairs easily. You can see when you enlarge the images. Do put that in mind if you have hairy pets or carpets in your house or pairing it with knitted wear.
The tights were very comfortable to wear. It felt very soft on the skin, and was very stretchy. As you would have imagined, the tights also has very good breathability.
Being the spotlight of Pierre Mantoux’s basic essential, the Veloutine 15 is packed with a lot of great features. It is very comfortable to wear and looks great on the leg. Minor snags are also reversible, thus maintaining the quality look throughout the day. The only problem I had was the attraction of loose hairs.
The recommended retail price on UK Tights is £18.99, or USD$26.07 on Hosieree, an online retailer based in the U.S. These retailers hold promotions from time to time, so you could buy them at a cheap price.
