Review: Wolford Neon 40 Tights (Tar; Updated: 30 Jun 23)

Having been doing several reviews in patterns and fishnets, I really miss solid colour ones.  Hence in this review, I would like to look at basic essentials. Particularly, the Neon 40 Tights by Wolford.

Strengths & Weaknesses

⊕ Shimmer with a powdery effect, like satin fabric.
⊕ Soft and very smooth texture.
⊕ Reinforced Toe.

⊙ Wider hose section leads to moderate envelopment.

Packaging & product description

The packaging is the same as the Wolford tights I reviewed before.

The product description online and on the back of the product are the same, as summarised below:

“Endlessly elegant: Semi-sheer tights with an extraordinarily luxurious sheen for a particularly brilliant look. The soft waistband with Wolford logo and almost invisible toe reinforcement ensure all-round comfort.”

  • Soft waistband featuring Wolford logo
  • Almost invisible toe reinforcement (Shadow Toe)
  • Cotton gusset
  • A confident basic item with fashion appeal

Appearance & texture

The Neon 40 are semi-opaque (40 denier appearance) tights in shiny finish.  It exhibits a slight sheen under ambient lighting and shines brightly under direct sunlight.  The texture feels moderately soft but extremely smooth.  The Wolford signature waistband measures 2.5cm wide.  It is made of elastic band in lace appearance with plush on the inner layer.  The fingerband is 7.5cm-8cm wide depending on the place of measurement.  There is a knitted gusset and the toe is reinforced.

The composition is 85% nylon and 15% elastane.

Size range

The size ranges from XS to XL.  As usual, I have included the chart below.  Size S is used in this review.

Colour

Being a basic essential, Wolford add/take away colours every so often.  At the time of updating this review, there are 8 colours available.  They are (from left to right): Cosmetic, Gobi, Soft Cacao, Admiral, Sodalite Blue, Black, Nearly Black and Anthracite.  The colour I used in this review is Tar (colour ref: 7477).

Impression

FIT

The fit was good as usual.  The entire hose was made wider though, hence only a moderate envelopment on the legs.  I believe the envelopment would be better on more curvy legs.

LOOK

The legs shimmered during broad day light and exhibited slight sheen under dim light condition.  Do expect your legs to be the centre of focus with these tights on.

The colour I used in this review is Tar (colour ref: 7477).  To me, it looks in-between Anthracite and Dark Grey, with a tint of purple.  I picked it up from Wolford Outlet Bregenz, hence it could be a trend colour back then.

The shine is best described as a shimmer with a powdery effect, displayed uniformly.  Combined with its semi-opaque appearance, it looks like satin fabric.  My partner’s first impression of the look was “you look like a seal!”

FEEL

The texture felt fairly soft and very smooth to the skin.  They are very comfortable, even after an entire day of wearing.  Of note, it is extra slippery when walking on polished surfaces with the tights on because of their very smooth nature.  Walk mindfully when not wearing shoes.  In addition, the breathability is moderate.

Final words

The powdery shimmer brings out the elegance out from you.  The soft and very smooth texture makes them comfortable to wear.  No wonder why it become a long standing product.

The Neon 40 Tights are retailed for €29, £27 or USD$49 €35, £35 or USD$55.  You can find them online and in retail shops, sometimes in reduced price.

Hi Annie, when I was surfing the Wolford website today, I found two item numbers for the Neon 40 Tights. While 18391 has been there for decades, the 14978 is relatively new, and include trend colours only. While this may not be relevant at all, I wonder if only one of which is discontinued?

Wolford Neon 40 tights have in a Gobi color but Wolford discontinued their Electric blue once they sold out. You would think such a great seller they would bring them back in this color called them and they have no intention doing so being that I am disappointed with this brand.

I feel you🤗
From my past observations, Wolford introduces new colours for their bestseller tights along side new collection. So it may come back in the future, sometimes not exactly the same colour but similar.

Wolford neon 40 are the best tights I have ever worn, well worth the extra money. As a previous poster said, great for men who wear tights as the sizing is great.

Hi….i really love fine hosiery especially Wolford, they feels like the 2nd skin. Wolford Neon 40 Tights is the best, there’s one name Wolford Fatal Neon 40 – skin color, very shinny and smooth. Share your thoughts after you wearing this tights, you’ll get lots of attentions on your beautiful shinny legs right?

The Neon40 model is one of my favorite models. His belt goes up very high and very attractive with his Wolford logo.
Semi opaque, it is nevertheless very supple and is very good in summer in its gobi or caramel color with a white skirt or shorts.
Its particular brilliance pushes more to wear it with shorts for outings in box and jiggle on the dance floor . It is also produced in XL size, very practical for men who love wearing tights
