Review: Falke Shelina 12 Tights

Finally, the Spring has arrived and Autumn if you are in the north hemisphere.  It is now the best time to take those tights out of the draw and give them a wash, because there is never a better season to wear them than Spring/Autumn.  If you are thinking of looking something new, why not take a bit of time and see if these tights suit you.

Highlights

  • Comfortable sheer tights with an airy feel
  • Delicate texture with an extra shimmer for a natural and dynamic look
  • Highly stretchy
  • Very prone to snag

First look & packaging

Unlike the Falke thermo leggings I reviewed a while ago, these Shelina 12 Tights are more extensively packaged to give a more sophisticated looking.

Appearance & texture

Being 12 denier, Shelina 12 Tights is sheer and airy throughout.   It has a similar texture to those of Wolford Nude 8 and Gerbe Ethnic Colour Tights, which is very soft and delicate.  However, Shelina 12 Tights has a glossy appearance, with the level of such I categorise as “medium”*.  The gusset is made with a net structure (sizes S-L).  In addition, the waistband is approximately 2.4cm wide and the toes are not reinforced – ideal for open toe shoes.

The composition is 60% nylon and 40% polyurethane.  The latter is a form of elastane.

Size range

The tights range from S to XL (see below for size chart).  I chose Size L because of my height being 171cm (5’7”).  However, due to the high percentage of elastane, I believe Size M/L will also fit without any issue.  One thing I noticed is that the left hose is about 3cm longer than the right hose.

Colour

The palettes shown below are the colours available for Shelina 12 Tights.  From left to right, they are named: Sun, Crystal, Brasil, Golden, Noisette, Coffee, Black and Powder.  Mind there is a colour difference between the palettes and the colours we perceive (the black colour palette being the perfect example).  Therefore it is best to go to the official website and enlarge the image for a more accurate colour matching.  The pair I bought is Brasil colour.

Impression

I usually wear gloves when putting them on/off, but these tights are the ones I would not recommend using gloves because of their texture, which is very prone to snag.  Therefore, it took me a while to wear them, but once having them on, I can say they are comfortable to wear and true to its size.  In addition, they are airy, a bit cold for me in fact with wide leg pants as the Spring is only just arrived.  But, I am sure they are very suitable for tropical regions.

Tights that have the similar texture usually comes in matte to give a more natural appearance.  Shelina 12 Tights on the other hand, have a glossy finish.  I would describe the level of glossiness being soft and feminine.  There is also gradient involved, depending on the brightness of the environment as well as the viewing angle, thereby making the legs more dynamic.

The tights are very stretchy thanks to the high percentage of polyurethane.  In fact, I can totally ignore the length difference of the hose.

Shelina 12 Tights are not without their weaknesses and the most prominent one is prong to snag.  Even cotton fabric or pilling can cause snag, thus making these tights short-lived.  If you have tips for extending their live expectancy, please do share with me.

Verdict

This is the second time I have reviewed a Falke product and frankly speaking, I like the high quality and the wider price range that Falke has to offer.

Despite the tights being much more affordable than those made by Wolford and Gerbe, I still would not recommend them due to their very delicate nature.  However, if you do like this kind of appearance and feel, Falke Shelina 12 tights is a great buy.  You can find them in retail shops as well as online for £10 or €12.

*Using Wolford products as an example, the level of glossiness lies between Satin Touch 20 Tights and Neon 40 Tights.
